Release yourself from the confines of what you should be doing or what you shouldn’t have done. Decide to seize the day and commit to doing one thing a day that makes it your own. Choose to do something that is definitively you – wear a giant sun hat on your lunch break or make a phone call for a whole hour to someone you love. The past has passed and the future is unknown, so make the most of now, and all its infinite possibilities.

Celebrate your achievements and those of your friends, with champagne more often. It is important that we recognise and celebrate even our smaller achievements, such as ticking off a goal at work, learning something new, or even carrying out some of the suggestions in this book.

When we actively celebrate an event, whether it’s big or small, we are consciously recognising that we have accomplished something. Rewarding ourselves with a special event, even if it’s just sitting in the garden on a summer’s evening with a friend, some nibbles and a glass of bubbly, makes the achievement seem more concrete, and may even encourage us to try to achieve new things on a regular basis.

Commemorating achievements in this way also helps us to appreciate the smaller things that we do, which we often underestimate or overlook. If we ignore or diminish the things that we achieve, we may sense a feeling of disappointment in ourselves and what we do. By appreciating what we do, we begin to think more highly of ourselves, and also develop our sense of gratitude for the people who help us achieve our goals every day.
